August 7, 2015 - Due to the fact that I have relocated to the San Diego Ca. area, there will be no future updates to this site for the San Francisco Bay Area trails. I presently have no plans to expand this site to include my explorations of the San Diego area, though since the thought of doing so still lurks in some hidden corner of my brain, I guess I can't completely rule out the possibility of that happening sometime in the future.
In any event, thanks for visiting my site and I hope you find the existing info for the SF Bay Area useful.
See you on the trail (or for me now, maybe see you on the beach might be better!)

Due to the email address used for contacting me through this site being hacked I have shut down that email account so any links that say "Contact Me" or refer to contacting me will no longer work.

About the SiteIt's probably telling that the inspiration to create this website hit me while hiking one of the many trails in the Santa Cruz Mountains near my house. I have lived in the San Francisco Bay Area, more specifically the South Bay area, since the mid 1970's. I have always enjoyed hiking and exploring (see the About Me page for more details) and so over the years I have spent time hiking some of the almost scary number of trails that abound here.
In late 2011 I retired from my job and so I found I had considerably more time, and energy, to commit to my hiking/exploring/photographing passion. I started by exploring hiking spots near my neighborhood and was quite frankly amazed at the number of great trails I found within 5 or 10 miles of my home. I was kind of a shocked by this in that I have lived in the exact same place since 1998 and never knew that many of these trails existed, almost literally, right in my own backyard. My goal for this site is simple, to try and provide an entertaining, easy to understand source of information for any hiker, regardless of experience level, who happens to find themselves in my little corner of the "web'o'sphere". In order accomplish all this I realized I would have to post a wide variety of information. Of course I would need all the GPS data, trail maps, trail stats, directions to the trailheads, turn-by-turn directions while on the trail, links to other resources, maybe a few photos here and there and then of course my own (witty?) observations. However, in addition to all that, I realized I would also need to offer some basic information geared towards those just starting out in the hiking world (if this is you then make sure and check out the "Help Pages" section of the site). To finish up and let you get on to the more important task at hand, finding the right trail for your next hike, I just want to say I hope what you find here on my site helps you do just that. Let me know how I'm doing, You can share your thoughts good and bad, share a trail you think I should explore (or maybe even write up a trail yourself and have it posted here?) by going to the Contact Me page. Thanks for stopping by. See you on the trail, Bruce Hiking Essentials

Disclaimer, Disclaimer, Disclaimer!
While I do try to make the info posted here as accurate as possible, there could be some errors that slip through by mistake, ignorance, bad typing.... you get the idea. If you find a mistake let me know through the Contact Me page and I'll do my best to fix it. Though some of what's posted here is "fact" derived from State, County and City websites and brochures and my awareness and understanding of current scientific research, there is also a certain amount that is based on my personal experience and any biases I may have. And while I try to keep in mind that everyone has different levels of fitness some of those judgement calls may not match perfectly with your interpretations of your real world experience. Again feel free to Contact Me. And finally, hiking can be a strenuous exercise so if you have any health concerns, as they say, "consult your Doctor before starting any exercise program".
