Though I haven't hit the mountains for any hiking in the last week or so I have been getting out and doing what I call "City Hiking". This can be an excellent way to get the exercise value of hiking when you don't have the time to get to any of the mountain trails. It is also actually a great way to get to know your local neighborhood better. Additionly you may be surprised at what you'll find (see photo above of the turtles in one of the Perk Ponds in my neighborhood).
One great way to incorporate a City Hike into your routine is to combine your hike with running some errands. I regularly do my grocery shopping like this in a 6 or 7 mile loop on local bike paths and city streets (mostly residential streets). Of course it's a bit easier for me to do this as I'm a single person so most of the time my grocery needs for the week will fit in my backpack.
It is also nice to see some of the wildlife around the Perk Ponds returning as the ponds and streams fill with water. Slowly the geese, ducks and even a snowy egret or two are returning (along with a lot of other small birds of various species).
And of course no Spring post of mine here would be complete without at least one flower shot!
