Just got back from a great 7.8 mile loop through Calero County Park. I did a configuration of trails I had never put together before and it turned out to be full of a great variety.
Starting on the Pena and Los Cerritos trails I got some great views of Calero Lake (low water levels and all). Then taking the Javelina Loop trail I found myself immersed in the dense, nicely shady Oak/Bayberry forests of the next valley over from the lake.
If you haven't been out in any of the surrounding hills you might want to get out and see the unusal coloring of the grasses this year. At least in much of the South Bay they have a decidedly golden orange-ish tinge that I don't recall ever seeing before. I'm not sure if it's drought related, the grasses certainly did not have the chance to complete a "normal" growth cycle this year, but is is kind of a pretty color.
I'm not sure where these flowers are getting their water from but they are quite common in many spots in the South Bay hills at least. Maybe they are getting moisture from the strangely out of season daily early morning fog we've been having? I know some plants can do this.
